1/18/2011–Dark Rectangle

When I close my eyes I see a dark rectangle
A negative negative burnt retina mangled
I don’t allow myself to look anywhere else
In my dreams.

We have fenced in our eyes
They used to dance and prance on horizons
Open, spread their wings and fly
And allow the mind to laugh like a child
But the rectangle beckons, teases, seduces
Furrows the brow and tightens
Gasp for air you’re not breathing
Strangled by a brain
That can’t stop looking.
